Hysterosonography / Sonohysterography – Uterus and Fallopian Tube Imaging Using Foam

Hysterosonography is an advanced imaging technique used to examine the structure of the uterus and fallopian tubes. It provides a clearer view of the uterine cavity and fallopian tubes, helping to identify potential issues that may affect fertility, such as uterine abnormalities or structural blockages in the tubes.

The procedure is similar to a standard ultrasound examination. First, an initial scan of the uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes is performed, including a 3D imaging of the uterine cavity. In the next step, a speculum is gently inserted into the vagina, allowing for the insertion of a small catheter through the cervix.

During the ultrasound examination, a special solution called EXEM FOAM is carefully injected into the uterus, filling the uterine cavity. Using an ultrasound transducer, the movement of the foam is monitored as it passes from the uterus into the fallopian tubes, allowing for an assessment of their condition.

Hysterosonography is typically performed as part of an infertility evaluation or when other imaging tests, such as a standard ultrasound, reveal unclear findings. Many women undergo this procedure to help identify potential causes of difficulty conceiving.

Unlike other imaging methods such as an X-ray hysterosalpingography (HSG), which requires the use of iodine-based contrast and radiation exposure to the pelvic area, hysterosonography is radiation-free while still providing high-quality diagnostic imaging of the uterus and fallopian tubes.

Some women may experience discomfort or mild pain during the procedure, particularly if there is a blockage in the fallopian tubes or in cases of endometriosis. However, for most women, the procedure is not painful.

Before undergoing the examination, it is important to schedule it at the appropriate phase of the menstrual cycle—typically after menstruation has ended but before ovulation. Patients should also refrain from sexual intercourse from the start of menstruation until after the procedure to ensure that pregnancy is not present.
